Dumb question, but I have to ask 700 1987

Check it when its hot . I usually drive at least 1/2 hour before checking it. Then without turning off car/while it is still running park it on level area. With foot on brake go slowly thru all gears and back to park . Wait about a minute. Pull out tranny dip stick. Wipe it clean. Put it back in.Pull it back out and now check it on upper(hot) range. Hope this helps.
