A can of carb cleaner and a few minutes dedicated to cleaning the throttle valve and idle air control would certainly be time well spent if it has not been done in a long while. Examine the air tubes between these devices and between the mass airflow sensor and the throttle valve while you have them apart.
Is the idle smooth when the RPM is wandering or is it rough? If it is rough, suspect a vacuum leak. Hardest vacuum leak to spot is the intake manifold gasket. Fortunately, the intake manifold gasket is inexpensive and relatively easy to replace, except for the part about dropping the nuts and loosing them in the nooks and crannys on the side of the engine.
