my guess is that they probabluse them for two reasons:
1: When selling a $35k car in the 1990s, buyers didn't want to lift the hood and see its parts held together with the same bits that are used in common household plumbing. those other clamps have a much more finished look about them.
2: never have to retighten the clamps once they are crimped on
3: some doofus on the assembly line can't overtighten them as could be done with the screw-type ones
Since you've already take them off, I say replace them with what is accessible and reliable to you.
