I'm of the Keep It Simple persuasion. If the '83 system is driving you nuts, would converting to an older simpler system help?

Ie. My mother's '84 had points. Simple ignition system. Replaced the points with a drop in electronic module. Ignition system still simple. Coil, ballast resistor, electronic module in distributor. That's it.

Would it work for you, since your's is an '83? (Shouldn't cost much to pull the ICU and replace it with a Hot-Spark or Pertronix.)
