Hey folks,

Guess what? It was a funky brake booster hose. Now she's sweet and revvy all through her range at speed - and the brakes work better, too. I think my recent tranny service helped too - perhaps it was a combination (isn't it always?).

Thanks guys.

Now, this sucking sound in the dash still has me wondering... but I need to do my heater core (ACK!), so I guess I'll just bundle it. Scary. :O :P
