What with the oil filter, the alternator, and the physical size of the sending unit for the oil pressure gauge/idiot light, I wonder how busy the space in that area would become...??? If I ever remove the oil pan for any reason, I would consider drilling a hole, low in the side of the pan and welding in a bung for the 1/8 NPT fitting. That would answer the catastrophic road kill strike, as well as an available location out of the way of other interference. I have checked with a, "Known to be good Dealership", today, and found that in fact, the sending unit was always an accessory item, and that the supply has indeed dried up. They ain't available from Volvo. There are units available through www.egauges.com
Mine is a european unit, and measures from 0 to 170 C. I'll find one eventually. According to the parts guy at the Dealership, the originals were made as we would make one, by taking a factory drain plug, and drilling and tapping it for the 1/8 NPT thread. So we could easily make one ourselves.
