I agree on both points. It's certainly possible to pull just the motor, leaving the trans. But it's easier to pull both together.

I've done it both ways in the past, when I swapped the original tired B18 for the 2.1L B20 I left the trans in place. And later on when I rebuilt the B20 I pulled it as a unit.
