I don't know why Volvo would have made 242s any different then their other cars

Well, one source of this information is the brickboard, and it jibes with what I have read elsewhere.

the M-46 had been available on even the '75 240s with the b-20 engine

No, that would have been the M41. I didn't say none of the early cars had overdrive.

I had a '76 245 that had a m-46

I don't doubt it. I am speaking strictly of the '79 242 DL. At that time it was the base model 240. Oddly, in '79, the only 240 wagon offered, at least in this market, was designated DL. But they did have the amenities that were absent on the 242.
