REBUILT ENGINE 140-160 1970

Howdy,

If you can do the work, or if you have buds who can be bribed with adult beverages to do it for you it can be done for a lot less than $3500. Assuming you don't need new pistons, a lot less. Pull the engine, remove the head, crank, cam, pistons. Clean, clean, clean. Take the block, head, pistons, rods, and crank to the machine shop. Tell them you want to reuse the pistons if possible, and that you will source whatever is needed. Let them determine what is needed. Let them fit everything together, saves you a steep learning curve. Reinstall your fresh engine and enjoy.

Cheap engine stand: $40
Used engine lift: $100
Block cleaning brushes: $26
Ridge reamer, lifter puller, engine lifting chain, ring compressor: FREE Loaners from AutoZone
Gasket set: $115
Rings & inserts: $120
Rebuilt head, block inspection, prep, cam, crank, pistons installed at local machine shop: $200-$300
Steel timing gears: $120
D grind cam, A4000-15889 and lifters: $200
Rebuilt carbs from any of several rebuilders often cited here on the board: $300-$350
Oil pump, various and sundry bits, pieces, engine paint, cleaners, lubricants, etc: $200

Resell the tools you will never need again for about what you paid for them. Have a party.
