Richard;
Eric has the answers pretty much covered...I'd like to add that the drum assemblies are put together at the factory...probably pressed, and maybe with a thermal difference at that...I've never heard of anyone seperating them successfully (without bending them, and then they're worthless) even less getting them back together...
"badly scored" is a relative term also...one guy's "badly scored" could be anothers "lot's of wear ridges, and increased surface area"...I rarely machine drums or discs...don't forget, the new shoes will wear in to that profile...the must!...shops will always machine drums and rotors as a matter of course in doing any pad or shoe replacement...or course they want to sell you new drums/discs too...remember, whatever metal is machined off, translates into buying the piece sooner...and have you priced drums lately?
...and BTW any shop who machines drums should have the adapters to configure the lathe for any drum which comes along...those drums are similar to jeep, ford, and studibaker drums, so don't let them give you a story about being obscure because they're volvo either...
Cheers
