Howdy, Joe -- and Brickboarders --
I have a 1990 240 B230 engine transmission leak, too. It's gotten pretty bad.
At highway speeds, a fine mist of fairly clear ATF blows under and up behind the car's draft, coating the tailgate door and window.
I'm looking for advice on finding and fixing the leak, and on keeping the repair cost down as much as is practical.
The leak has worsened over time to the point now, that after a couple of years of adding a quart every 200 miles or so, that in recent months, it's a quart every 50 or so.
I too have never seen the Dexron IID spec on the shelf anywhere. So I've used whatever's available, always making sure it's Dexron III or better.
Some questions I've got are:
Q1) The young mechanic who last week told me this leak was sole reason the car failed the state inspection, said also that the underside was too coated to pinpoint anything.
Q) Should I have it steam-cleaned as a first step, and then do the park overnight over newspapers thing?
Q2) An online parts store listing the 240's tranny parts lists maybe 3 or 4 major seals and gaskets, and maybe another 3 or 4 more minor seals and gaskets.
Q) Is any one particular seal or gasket most likely to be the culprit? Which?
Q3) Assuming all the hardware is ok, what sort of costs will I encounter (in the Richmond Va. area) to have a shop drop the tranny, and replace a few seals and gaskets? I've heard a small shop might charge only $175 to $225. Does this sound right?
Thanks for whatever information you can give. And good luck to you and your brick! -- Roger
