Hi Jack, The black square box is the rheostat for sure. I have a few 80's clusters that I gathered trying to fix my 86 speedo. Turns out that my original cluster (Swiss Made) is not exactly the same as the later Japanese clusters and the harness coming in to clip on here actually was different in mine. Whenever I tried a Japanese cluster I would get no charge through the alternator and the gauges would be all over (due to incorrect voltages, turn up the dash lights and the tank would empty sort of thing!). I have examples of both the Swiss and Japanese of this vintage if you need anything specific.
