Klaus,

I had the same problem on a '91 240. It smoked just like yours from the gear selector. Mine turned out to be the PNP switch, but I can't remember if the 740 has a similar setup or not. I looked on FCP's site but couldn't find a listing for the neutral safety switch for your car.
