If you did not personally experience a slow decline in AC performance akin to "normal" leakage of refrigerant from the system in question you should have it evacuated and leak-checked. If the system had a serious leak to the point that it has exchanged gas w/the atmosphere over time then the receiver/drier will need to be replaced in order for the system to be operable (assuming no other major issues).
(EDIT: Boy did that ever sound pedantic, so my apologies if you already knew it... BTW is "First Charge" ester compatible?)
