Congrats on getting a solid car. I've never driven the "A" but in Canada, we had single SU powered Volvo's into the 80's. I don't think the early Volvo engines are real economy engines...they can do well (my dual SU B18 averaged 30mpg on the highway - about 15 around town). Even the B21/B23 were not high MPG engines. With proper tune, they can be OK, but they are not a Honda Civic.
