I took the carrier off my 92 244 block to replace the seals (I normally do it with the carrier on the block; I don't know what got into me and decided to take it off). After I cleaned everything well I put the gasket on, put a little RTV at the junctions and slide the carrier over the shafts and the two positioning pins. Then I tightened all the bolts and nuts to "good and snug". Afterward, my intermediate shaft won't turn freely anymore. I was at first really scared thinking that I might have damaged some bearings or gears by using an impact air wrench to take off the sprocket. After I loosen all the bolts and nuts on the carrier, the shaft turns freely again. I think that the only contact between the carrier and the shaft is the ring of rubber on the seal. No mater how "distorted" the carrier might get from tightening the bolts, it should not jam the shaft even close to what I see -- ~20 foot pound to turn it.

Possibility one: tightening of the bolts distorted the carrier so bad that it jams the shaft -- very unlikely!

Possibility two: one or more of the bolts goes through their hole and actually hit the distributor shaft and jams it ------ I poked the holes with a stiff wire and they don’t feel like “through holes”
