I think I found the source of some problems...! Clogged cowl drain 700 1987

Exactly. If the FAQ does not mention it, you'll find a little bit back-and-forth might be needed to get the cowl out. I've found that raising the hood between the "vertical full open" and "normal full open" position helps. Also if you care about appearances be careful of lower windshield trim. It can old, brittle and cranky about being moved.
