steering rack split boots? 200 1983

Keep in mind there are at least two types of boots... different for the ZF and CAM racks...

I just finished doing tie rods and found out the hard way after ordering the wrong parts.

And I agree.. you shouldn't need to mess with the alignment. Just loosen that tie rod lock nut, then put it back to where it was but not quite as tight, then unscrew the tie rod from its outer socket. Count threads and measure and all that too, of course.

While you're in there.. check carefully the tie rods... they were dreadfully worn in my wife's car at the inner sockets. I wouldn't be surprised if that's somewhat more common that is thought.

No need to pack with grease... any grease joints behind there are sealed.

Have fun.. it took me about 10 minutes each side to replace the tie rods. took almost an hour on one side to get that new boot on the rack... ;-)
