I agree with Bruce: It's FAR FAR easier to fix the thing in the car than to pull the engine. The only case in which I'd pull the engine is if everything else checks out ok and the only possible culprit is something siezed up in the block itself.

Try Bruce's suggestions, they are a great first step.
