Breather Theory

Just getting ready r/r another breather box on the latest 940(have done two prior) and in looking at the various diagrams I had a thought. Why not simply remove the return tube and O-ring which goes down into the crank case? If maximum free breathing is the goal then why not? The hole will still be there to allow the return oil to flow into crankcase but with the O-ring/return holder the whole will be twice as wide! Is there some other purpose to the return line I am missing? I appreciate your thoughts.
