780 re-fit - do you really need to change engine? 700 1988

Changing engine and transmission seems like a lot of work and expense, and you'll have enough to do with refinishing the cosmetics of the car. Is this engine all that undependable once you put it back into proper maintenance? The reputation for trouble may be more a function of the typical USA driver not doing the right maintenance on a rigorous schedule. On a trip, you could take a kit of spare parts.
