I first pulled the speedo apart to see what value capacitors I needed and then purchased them. Since I had already seen the physical size and location on the board where they were mounted, I had a good idea of how large they could be. The physical dimensions can be larger than the originals – so here are some specs and a rough estimate of the largest dimensions that would probably fit:
General Purpose
Voltage Rating – Same as original or greater.
Capacitance - Same
Radial Leads (spacing up to 7mm) – I believe the originals were radial but you might be able to get by with axial if necessary.
Through Hole
Tolerance +/- 20% or less
The rest of the specifications (if available) you probably don’t have to worry about.
Electrolytic capacitors typically have a Coke can shape. The largest dimensions that would fit are about a length of 2.0cm with a diameter of about 1.0cm (this is a rough guess).
Note: Electrolytic capacitors have a polarity. The speedo circuit board has markings showing plus and minus.
Thanks for sending me the FAQ repair by David D'Angelantonio.
