Hi Bob,

Flashers fall into two general categories: thermal, and solid state. Pretty much any thermal unit that will plug in should work, although it might flash at a somewhat different rate from the old one. Solid state ones need to be selected to drive a set number of bulbs -- if you get the wrong one, it just won't flash.
