Bob, one of the things you might want to check is the wires that go through the hinge to the wiper motor. Open the tailgate and look up toward the hinges. You should see gray wire bundles coming from the car through the hinge and into the tailgate. If you can see bare wires, this could be your problem. They are a pain to change out.
