I work in an autoglass shop and the newer style W/S comes with the trim seal bonded to the glass at the Pilkington plant,if the installer is telling you that it needs a "kit" they are probably referring to the tube of urethane needed to install The W/S.
If you want to keep the original look the old set up can be improved by using urethane to install both the W/S and the trim.
