The smoke came only after trying unsuccessfully to start my car. After the car would turn over it would run just long enough for me to get out of the driver's seat, start squealing, and die. When I gave it gas, it would run, but it would struggle terribly. It was while it was struggling terribly that the excessive squealing and smoke began.
