recirculation door - doesn't make sense !! 200 1990

ok i've given up on trying to fix the recirc door thing and put a ball in it - problem solved - well sort of, but here's the deal. if i push the button in, that cuts the vacuum. door should be on recirc. if i pull the ball out, the door flips forward and i get cold air from the cowl on the hood. afaict that should NOT happen. so if it's summer and i pull the ball out and want the air on recirc i'll be getting warm air in the system - that is not what i expect. or do i have this totally backwards ??!!! the space around the door is totally clear of debris and i've even pushed the door forward to make sure it's totally forward. is there another door somewhere else ?
