ECT sensor 200 1983

Hi Joe,

I guess I wasn't clear. The sensor is in the head below cylinder #3. Count cylinders from the front toward the back. It is hidden below the intake manifold. It has a harness connection. The sensor reports the engine's temperature to the fuel computer, and is the fuel injection equivalent of the choke in carbureted cars.

You can remove it with a deep 19mm socket. You can reach it without removing the intake manifold using a 10" extension on your 3/8" drive ratchet. Have the new one ready, though not much coolant will be lost. Don't lose the copper gasket.

Look before you buy, though. What you found may be the remains of one broken off and dropped by the previous guy. That valley catches a lot of stuff dropped.

If you search this board, you will find many posts about this sensor and the symptoms. Having this information in a thread about drive train growls doesn't help others trying to search. People scanning the index will see another thread on center carrier bearings and notice it has responses - no need to look inside, just another center bearing thread.

Here's a pic of the sensor below #3. The one I'm holding is the knock sensor, not the ECT.
