Missing and backfiring? If it is the typical stumble idle of the 230 that is not serious. Cleaning the AMM with CRC MAF cleaner worked wonders on my 87 and 88 5 speed 240s for that stumble idle and overall performance,check for intake vacuum leaks also. backfiring will blow out that rear cam seal. You can check and adjust the timing also,inductive timing light on the #1 cylinder.
