Thanks Sprtwgn -- very handy to be able to find a photo of the same problem. It didn't look like it would affect the structural integrity of the suspension, but I wasn't sure. I can get the part locally, as I live not too far from a classic volvo parts specialist and mechanic. I plan to get all the welding my 144 needs done in one (expensive) go -- sills, rear arches, the rear suspension mount and a small patch in the spare wheel well.
