i had the same problem and it was the fuel boiling in the bowls. No amount of shielding or isolating did the trick. I went against all sound reasoning and got the Weber setup. My troubles are over, well, that trouble anyway. I think the stuff they call gasoline these days has such a low boiling point that it has a hard time in the vintage carbs. Just my two cents.
