Explain "shorting out the starter terminal". :-)

Do new bushings, because eventually the linkage will stop "linking". Plus they're like a dollar or two each... and offer an opportunity to grumble cusswords to the universe while you do them!

A bad switch will indeed cause funny problems... but usually it's just "no start"... the "shorting out" thing doesn't sound good depending on what and where it is.
