I've seen more than a few of them.
A recent thread over on TB even had the external dimensions of a B230 and a 5 cylinder whiteblock, and the 5 cylinder was slightly smaller. More tightly packaged, as necessitated by the transverse installation in the 850.
A big issue to ovecome in putting one in a RWD car is the oilpan. The sump is in the wrong place to go around the crossmember. The fix is to get a 960 6 cylinder oil pan, slice a section out of the middle, and use it.
There's no doubt that having 20 valves to move air in and out makes for more HP.
