Howdy Brain,
The easiest way is to direct the stream into a bottle while you have someone else crank the engine over. You can do this when you replace the fuel filter -- you didn't mention replacing the filter in your list of things done.
Using the limited information provided, my guess is that new plugs and wires, and a fuel filter will get it going.
At the same time, clean the flame trap and replace all the ancient vacuum hoses. To get a baseline for the engine you can do a compression check; that is good information to have on file for future reference.
When was the timing belt last changed?
