I've done it for my 67 and my 68. I tend to install the VDO tach inside the stock Smiths Tach Pods (which are rarer than the 52mm VDO tachs).
I will pass along this warning.
Be VERY careful how you wire it up. A 52mm tach either wasted my bosch blue ignition coil *OR* a failing coil wasted my 52mm tach. No idea how I could have messed it up, but removing the tach from the system restored my ignition (briefly) before I had to replace the coil. I've not hooked up a tach since.
To put the 52mm tach inside a smith's pod requires that you open the tach's casing.
