neutral safety switch should I replace? 700 1990

My wifes 740 GLE would not start unless the gearshift was jiggled. I took apart the shifter and removed the neutral safety switch which also turns on the reverse lights. I cleaned it and it looks as thought the copper connector had melted on the plastic so it would not spring forward. I fixed it by prying it out and now it works. Should I leave it or replace?
