Hello,
Volvo used 2 types of lock washers, split locks and wave washers.
I prefer to change lock washers and lock nuts after each use.
Since most of the wave washers are not available, mostly because they are standard sizes, I will replace a wave with a split lock.
But if the lock washer is to go against aluminum, you really should use a flat washer to protect the aluminum.
Common places for wave washers on a B18/B20 are the front and rear crankshaft seal housings, the distributor base housing, the water pump, the starter motor bolts, the bellhousing bolts and on late B18 and all B20 engines, the transmission to bellhousing brace.
The front and rear crankshaft seal housings use 1/4" bolts and 6mm wave washers are a good substitute.
The water pump uses 5/16" wave washers and 8mm wave washers are an excellent substitute.
The bellhousing and starter bolts use 11/16" wave washers and I have not found a good substitute and therefore reuse the old ones are replace them with a split lock and flat washer.
The transmission to bellhousing brace uses 9/16" wave washers and once again, no suitable replacement is available.
There are some standard size wave washers, but they are very thin in both thickness and outer diameter and I do not like to use them.
