wife needs wheels - what price range?

New car or used? If you want new, there are a number of nice wagons available:
1. Volvo V70
2. BMW 328 touring
3. VW Jetta wagon - even available with a great turbodiesel
4. Subaro Outback or Forester

2 and 3 are available with manual transmission but you'd probably have to order.

For a more "suburbanite"-oriented family:

1. Mazda 5
2. A Toyota Camry-based tall wagon

Astro van? Wow, you were brave or patient. People scoff at the cost of new, but your wife might be thankful to drive a car with nice AC, top safety features, quiet, etc. And peace of mind for you.
