If it ain't broke, don't fix it would be my recommendation.

Regular tuneups, preventive maintenance (oil changes etc) and addressing rich/lean running conditions will keep the cat healthy almost indefinitely.

You can buy california legal cats for your volvo from www.eeuroparts.com ALOT cheaper than from the dealer.

Drive it until it doesn't pass SMOG because of the cat and then replace it.
