Picked up this hint from a (dare I say this?) Chevrolet Man. Instead of paint, use spray graphite. I obtained a can from ZEP for about $18.00.

Spray it on liberally, then work it into the cast iron surface with an old flannel shirt. Once bolted on and 'cured' by the first heat cycle it turns a lovely dark gray and stays that way.
