IIRC on the AW 71 auto transmission the switch operates an electrical solenoid valve located 1/2 way up the side of the trans, mounted towards the front of the transmission in the same way the M46 OD transmission works, the auto trans engagement is a hydraulic valve just like the M46, and the valve hydraulically couples a 4th gear that is located ahead of the first three gears, and operates at a drive ratio below the 1:1 final drive ratio, which is technically an over dive gear, just like the M46. Because it is located ahead of the first three gears, it has 'overdrive' in all gears.
Unlike the ZF transmission which has 4 forward gears and your argument is sound, the AW 71 is truly an overdrive transmission.
