After adjusting the valves to .016, because they needed it, I set the crank pulley to 20 BTDC and visually put the rotor at #4. Engine started right up with no problems. I really need to buy a cheap timing light and/or a dwell meter (where to find them?).
Who knows why the timing was soooo far off. The distributer was tight.
I took the car up to 65mph in 4th with no issues, except for a bit of noise. I have to get used to having a car with no underhood noise insulation :)
One of these days I will have to learn how to take the Weber carb apart and clean it. But first things first - clean the engine bay and the flame trap.
