Just watched a professional windshield removal

You can legally set a windshield on a butyl dam,you must then follow up with urethane around the perimeter with ideally at least a 5/16 band of urethane contact to glass and pinchweld.
The tool you described was most likely an "Equalizer" a very handy tool.
