On mine I thought I'd try something cheesy and easy first, and revisit if I needed to.

So I just took some this sheet metal and cut out some small rectangles, and bent them around the pins on the shift lever ball. The shims took up the extra space worn in the slots. A few blobs of grease and reassembly. Nice tight shifter, it's stayed that way for a couple of years so far.
