I have a 1998 740 GLE so mine may be similar to yours - or not. I don't know if mine has been modified but it was surprisingly easy to get to, it was between the #3 and 4 intake manifolds. I thought it would be under the manifold but I was able to access it easily from above. Thankfully mine was in great shape, apparently the previous owner had it replaced or at least kept it clean.
