If it is the button I am thinking of, it is used to allow the car to shift into 4th gear. In one position, it will not shift past 3rd, and in the other position it can shift into 4th and will allow the torque converter to lock up at about 47 mph if it has the locking torque converter. An illuminated arrow on the dash board should be on if it is in the 3rd gear position.
