POWER STEERING 1800

I have not got it together yet, but I have a EPS (electronic Power Steering unit) from a Chevy Cobalt (believe Saturn and Malibu uses the same one). Very compact, does seem to fit, just I need to get through a few other projects before fabricating brackets for this one.

The unit shown here is the Cobalt (GM)

All you are really working with is the area marked motor and control unit. The rest can be dumped other than the shafts, and if you got a complete unit, they come with some very nice universals.

As stated in the previous post, just the power wires get it working, almost everything is self contained in the control box. (mounted to the eps motor)

On the factory application, the unit is fed speed feedback in order to adjust the motor torque (stronger at slow, less at higher MPH) Without the Input I guess it lands in the middle.

I Emailed this guy in the UK. He make a box to attach to the main control which gives you two trim pots to set a feedback range and avoid any over responsiveness ... to your taste.

I still need to send him some photos of the unit so he can confirm his unit fits, but the GM Cobalt unit is the same as the Vauxhall/Opel his box is set up for. He also offers a voltage conditioner for older charging systems to eliminate voltage swings. Prices seem very reasonable.

Here is a good photo of the complete unit as removed from the Cobalt

Hope that we now have someone who has installed a couple we can get some pointers.

I removed everything from the motor to the steering wheel nut an spline. I have the steering shaft at a machine shop along with a stock P1800 steering shaft. He is going to cut the P1800 thread and spline off the stock shaft and weld it true on to the cobalt shaft. Luck would have it, the P1800 shaft when cut off slides over the end of the cobalt shaft. By using the end of the P1800 shaft it looks like I can just cut down the P1800 tube to the length I need to reach the EPS motor, allowing me to use the original P1800 tube mount to attach to the dash.

That's the plan ... :)

Much of the car is in parts and need a couple more months of assembly before I start adding "options"

Any feedback on the project is appreciated.

Steve
