Building on what he says I would start with a fluid flush with good Mobil synthetic ATF. There are many DIY descriptions for doing it here. (Real easy)
About the only thing that would make the symptom you discribe would be sticking solinod valve which the flush may cure. If not the valve is behind the bottom cover on the transmission and shouldn't cost a lot to replace.
