loud klonk in front end

1993 245 wagon: when i back out of the driveway or hit a pothole with the wheels turned to the left, i get a very loud 'klonk' that jolts the driverside front end of the vehicle. Bouncing the vehicle by hand, i hear nothing...also hitting bumps or potholes straight-on, i also hear no sound. Any suggestions on what might be the culprit here ?
