A spacer ring in my future 120-130

Generally speaking, though, a mismatch between the spacer and flange would end up with the gear clamping down on the flange and locking the motor up tight. Similar to what happens when someone forgets the spacer. In your case, it still sounds like the steel gear isn't tightening down on to the cam snout far enough. Is the key binding it up?
